ONTARIO NORTHLAND PURCHASES NEW PASSENGER RAIL CARS
NORTH BAY - - Ontario Northland today announced the purchase of 10 passenger rail cars, including one Full-Dome Dining/Kitchen car, two Half-Dome Lounge cars, one Kitchen car, one Power car, and five Salon Cars.
The cars, purchased from BC Rail, were previously in service on the Pacific Starlight Dinner train. The equipment is now at Ontario Northland’s shop complex where it will be readied for service. Deployment of the equipment has not been finalized but it is expected that the Full-Dome car, the two Half-Dome cars, and at least two of the salon cars will be used on the Polar Bear Express for the 2004 season and then on the Little Bear train between Cochrane and Moosonee. At peak travel times, this will provide increased seating capacity. The Power car will also be available for use on both trains, providing greater reliability for the services.
“We are particularly pleased to be adding these features to the Polar Bear Express service for this, its 40th anniversary year. The addition of the two-level, dome cars will truly showcase the North,” said ONTC Chair & CEO Royal Poulin.
Combined with the introduction of a new reservations system, these cars will provide greater flexibility for accommodating groups and tours.
“This acquisition reinforces our commitment to the long-term sustainability of ONTC and supports economic development by enhancing one of Northern Ontario’s premier tourist attractions,” stated Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci.
